USS Dolphin monkey NH 54538

USS Dolphin, some of the ship’s officers, with a monkey mascot, circa 1889, likely picked up on the way-round the globe. Odds are the officer holding him is CDR George Francis Faxon Wilde. Decorated as a midshipman at the Battle of Mobile Bay, Wilde would go on to command the monitor USS Katahdin, the cruiser USS Boston during the Span Am War, and the battleship USS Oregon then retire in 1905 as head of the Boston Navy Yard.
