Of course, it’s just a little incongruous to demonstrate infrared night vision technology in broad daylight. The Snooperscope came courtesy of RCA Laboratories in Princeton, NJ, whose 1941-42 building is still visible from U.S. Route 1. It was one of those technologies whose advantage would be lost if the enemy obtained a copy (see Enigma and the proximity fuse for other examples), so it was only used on and Iwo Jima and Okinawa, where RCA publications reported that it accounted for 30 percent of Japanese military casualties in the first three weeks of the invasion. Contribute to the Sniperscope surveys being compiled by some dedicated researchers, http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/IRT120.html, and learn more about U.S. Army nightfighting technology, courtesy of the UGCA: https://ugca.org/07jan/night.htm.
What’s the source of the photo?
Thanks, Alex. Which photo? The Aussie is from the AWM which has a spread of three images (147850, 147851, 147849) of 3RAR soldiers with the Snooper. ( https://www.awm.gov.au/advanced-search?query=korea%20sniper%20scope&collection=true&facet_type=Photograph )
