Russian naval mines of the 1904 era were not that much more advanced than the black powder Jacobi mines
of the Crimean War, a design that predated Farragut’s damnation in the Civil War. The Russo-Japanese war experience led the Russkis to develop the M08 mine shortly after, one that is still used extensively today.
