USS Bainbridge (DD-1) was the first ship commissioned as a destroyer in the United States Navy, authorized on May 4, 1898, three days after the commencement of the Spanish-American War. She served most of its active life in the Asiatic Station. In World War I she was based at Gibraltar, where it served as an escort ship for Allied shipping out of the Mediterranean Sea.
