August 1941: Sappers of the 3rd Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, Force 111, burning 450,000 tons of coal piles during Operation Gauntlet while the wireless stations in the islands at Barentsburg, Longyearbyen, Kap Linné and Grønfjord, which had been beaming meteorological reports to Germany since June 1940, were destroyed, an important victory in the “weather war.” Photograph by war correspondent Ross Munro.
