Nakhimov’s Imperatritsa Mariya under sail, as painted by Alexei Hanzen in 1916 on the occasion of the battleship with the same name joining the fleet. The Khrabryi-class ship of the line was the last all-sail-powered ship of the line built for the Russian Navy. At Sinop, she fired an amazing 2,128 rounds and shrugged off 60 Turkish hits. She was later scuttled during the Siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War, her guns and sailors used to strengthen the city’s defenses.
