Just Returned from Smithville MS
Just came back from a two week deployment to Smithville Mississippi in rural Monroe County. The town was pulverized by an EF-05 Tornado with estimated winds of 205mph. Amazing damage and devastation.
Most trees were sheered off 15feet up…..and the trunk that was left had the very bark blown right off of it. This branch weighed about thirty pounds and went almost four feet long….no tree was within 30 feet of it
Smithville’s small town (population 800~) had its bank torn apart and all that remained was the well-built vault.
Ive worked and lived through a dozen hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, war zones and etc and I’ve never seen anything like what i saw in Smithville. No less than 16 people lost their lives there in this vortex that came and went in less than 7-minutes.
My heart goes out to the city of Smithville, the county of Monroe County and all involved. Great job by the HHT 1/98th Armor of the Mississippi Army National Guard. “Southern Steel”
Great job done by this unit in recovery, security and SAR.
