Wrangel, “The Black Baron,” died in 1928 and was a dynamic leader of the Russian exile movement, although the Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia, the old Imperial Army commander in 1914-15, seen here in state in 1929 under uniformed guard, while not officially part of the White Army during the Civil War (a body which was anything but monarchist) was also a powerful figure to the exile community.
