Surrendered German Submarine UB-88 at Brooklyn Navy Yard showing net cutter magic eye April 1919.
UB-88 at Brooklyn Navy Yard showing saw teeth on bow used to cut nets, damage to bow, and “magic eye” to ward off evil spirits, 29 April 1919. No details on why she carried the eye, but many German gunboats operating in Chinese river waters at Tsingtao had the same practise, so it could have been that one of her crew hailed from the Graf Von Spee’s Asiatic Fleet.
