Old Glory Rises Over Alaska by Austin Briggs, showing Prince Maksutova and his wife under the flagpole near the Tsar’s troops. Maksutova, who was a trained naval officer, fought during the Battle of Sinop and the siege of Petropavlovsk in the Crimean War, remained in Sitka for a year to help close things out. He died an admiral in his St. Petersburg home in 1889.
