On April 1, 1979, LTJG Beverly Kelley became the first woman to command a Coast Guard cutter cape
Kelly, who graduated from OCS in 1976, on Cape Newagen’s bridge back in the day. She went on to skipper the 270-foot cutter Northland as well as the 378-foot cutter Boutwell before retiring in 2006.
