This commando is my grandfather. Sgt Andrew Haggarty of Glasgow, UK. He was 22 years old here. Volunteered for the commando regiment at 18. He had a wife, 2 sons and 3 grandchildren (myself and my 2 sisters). He made it through WW2 and lived out his life as a family man in the east end of Glasgow (where he was born and bred). Never uttered a word about the war to his sons or anyone else – to him it was his duty and not something to glamorize or discuss. He passed at 75 years old in Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He was a kind, gentle, golden-hearted grandfather and I miss him ever day.
