Double the Wings Double the Fun

Ever since the first flights at Kitty Hawk, biplanes were the name of the game in aviation. Until about 1936, there were more biplanes inteh air than anything else. They are still used and manufactured today for a number of purposes including crop dusting, aerobatics and tours.

1943 Stearman biplane in its former WWII USN markings, now used as a tour plane. Top speed about 150-kts.

A number of groups have been working on designs for the next generation of supersonic jets. Now an MIT researcher has come up with a concept that may solve many of the problems that grounded the Concorde. Qiqi Wang, an assistant professor of aeronautics and astronautics, says the solution, in principle, is simple: Instead of flying with one wing to a side, why not two?

They think the next bi-plane can break the sound barrier and do it cheaply…..
