Camp Shelby Mississippi MP shot, saved by vest

CAMP SHELBY — An MP at the Camp Shelby military base was shot by someone at the base’s north gate but was saved by the protective vest he was wearing.
Camp Shelby officials said the shooting happened Friday night.
Officials at the camp south of Hattiesburg said the officer was making a routine security check at the base’s North Gate about midnight when he was shot. The officer’s name was not released. He was taken to Forrest General Hospital as a precaution, and was released.
A search was on for the suspect. The incident is under investigation by the Forrest County Sheriff’s Office and the Army Criminal Investigations Division.

A new twist in the investigation into the shooting of a military police officer at Camp Shelby. The soldier could face charges in the case.
Monday, the soldier’s wife, Tiffany Wright, was charged with shooting him early Saturday morning at Camp Shelby’s north gate.
Officials said the MP initially told investigators he was shot by a white man in a pickup truck. As the probe wore on, the evidence suggested the MP knew the person who shot him in the chest.
Forrest County Sheriff Billy McGee said the soldier’s story just didn’t add up.
“Even though you would probably be in excruciating pain from being shot with a bulletproof vest on, the most natural thing for a law enforcement officer would be return fire, until his gun was empty, and he never fired a shot. He never drew his weapon after he was shot. And we never recovered a shell casing from the pistol that she shot. So there was suspicions. Everything didn’t add up with his story and the more we pushed him for the truth he finally gave it up,” McGee said.
According to the sheriff, Tiffany Wright went to Camp Shelby dressed in her husband’s army fatigues and cap.
The Sheriff also said after the shooting, Wright met her husband at the emergency room and they went home together.
The MP, whose name has not been released could be charged with trying to cover up the incident by Forrest County. Military officials said the case remains under investigation by the Army Criminal Investigative Division.
