A pretty good take on our love of zombies over the past hundred years

“There is a fiend for every fear. The loss of emotional control? The werewolf is here, ready to turn you into a beast. The perils of  physical intimacy? Bare your throat for the tainted kiss of the vampire.

But there’s a deeper terror.

Those monsters only threaten to add something to who you are. The zombie takes what you’ve become — and wipes it away. He’s an erasure of the self. He’s perpetual anonymity. He’s psychic annihilation.

He’s everywhere, too. A quick web search turns up nearly 900 movies that feature the walking dead; more than a third of those came out in the last five years (and that’s not even counting zombie video games, TV shows and novels).

Brad Pitt’s “World War Z,” opening next week, is the latest and most elaborate, boasting a major star and wide-screen scenes of a global epidemic (and the biggest cannibal-cadaver budget ever, at roughly $200 million). It’s part of the latest trend: The apocalyptic zombie.”
