Return to Hey, there is a tank sticking up out of the street
Huh, nope, not a Pantherturm in France (that, AFAIK, were rare, there), but a Pantherturm in Piedimonte S Gennaro, south of Cassino, in Italy, seen in early 1944. That Pantherturm (btw, using a standard PzKpfw V Ausf A turret) was part of the Senger defence line in the Liri valley. It was commandered from Geferiter Herbert Fries – that’s him in the photo – from 2./ Fallschirm-Panzer-Jäger Abteilung 1. On 05 September 1944 he will became the younger recipient of RK der EK (Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross) for the remarkable feats of 21-22-23 May 1944, when he destroyed most of the 20 Sherman tanks from the Polish 6th Armrd Rgt ‘Dzieci Lwowskich’, 2nd Warsaw Armrd Bde, 2nd Polish Corps that were advancing along the main SS6 Casilina.
