USS Gettysburg vs Pirate Skiff
The above video excerpt from a snow on Spike about the US Navy Vs Somali Pirates is a great representation of a modern navy facing a threat from a Asymmetric force in real time.
In it a SH-60 Seahawk from the Aegis cruiser USS Gettysburg is facing off with a 30-40-foot puntland pirate skiff powered by tow outboards and a six man crew armed with portable weapons (Ak-47s, RPG etc)…While the ‘Burg and her chopper do stellar work and stop the pirates, the use of a $Billion$-dollar shield of the fleet capable of stopping theater IRBMs and some ICBMs under certain scenarios, to drop the hammer on a couple guys in a speedboat seems like overkill.
A 170-foot PC, or better yet a 1960s era 210-foot Reliance Class Medium Endurance Cutter from the USCG would accomplish the same mission with a much smaller footprint and more appropriate level of force.
Too bad we dont have any LCS’s….
