Humans vs. Zombies game sparks N.C. State gun alerts

RALEIGH — Two reports this week of possible men with concealed guns on the campus of N.C. State University stemmed from students playing a game called Humans vs. Zombies that has become a phenomenon on U.S. college campuses in recent years, university police said today.

“… Police have determined that both reports of individuals on campus who might be carrying handguns were related to the Humans vs. Zombies game, and that there was no threat to campus,” according to a N.C. State campus police department news release. “Both incidents were related to the same individual, who contacted police after hearing the descriptions and locations,” police said in a statement.

They did not identify the student. Though it was a game, police said they “thank those individuals who witnessed suspicious behavior and contacted authorities.”

The game has become so popular that it has its own website, humansvszombies.org, describing the game as “Humans vs. Zombies (HvZ) is a game of moderated tag played at schools, camps, neighborhoods, military bases, and conventions across the world. Human players must remain vigilant and defend themselves with socks and dart blasters to avoid being tagged by a growing zombie horde.”

US and Russia Cancel War Games

Russian Prime Minister (former President) Vladimir Putin, himself a former Communist Party and KGB member, seems to be defrosting the Russian Bear that had been put in carbonite when the Cold War ended. With the recent incursion into a disputed portion of the former Russian vassal of Georgia, relations have cooled to the point of near 1980s levels. When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979, US President Jimmy Carter boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Then in 1984 the Soviets withheld their enhanced team from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics Games in return for the 1983 US invasions of Grenada and actions in Lebanon.

This game seems to be dusted off and being replayed on a smaller but no less important level today. When Russia entered disputed Georgian territory without asking last week, the US announced that it would be unable to participate in the FRUKUS naval exercise in the Pacific. The FRUKUS exercises were started in 1988 specifically to foster closer relations between Russia and the West. Now Russia, in turn has pulled out of the NATO Open Spirit 2008 naval games in the Baltic and canceled the scheduled port visit of a US Perry Class frigate to the Russian Naval Base at Petropavlask.
