Zombie hoard expected for latest EMA training event

“For a second time in three years, the EMA is asking for people dressed as zombies to be part of a disaster training exercise from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Zoombezi Bay water park.

The training that the EMA is calling the “Zombie-zy Bay Exercise” will teach local first responders and Columbus Zoo and Aquarium staff how to deal with the repercussions of a tornado. During the exercise, zombie participants will play storm victims and rescuers will focus on the three T’s of disaster response: triage, treatment and transport.

When participants arrive at the park, they’ll receive a card that explains the extent of their injuries. Some won’t survive the tornado because they won’t heed the zoo’s safety warnings, some will leave unscathed and others will need medical assistance for varying degrees of injury……”

CBRN Company sponsors Zombie run

Now Zombie Runs are the popular thing in the 5K world. All over the place you see these fun runs where particpants skedaddle away from the shambling dead. What is different about one in Athens Alabama is that it is being sponsored by the 1343rd Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense (often abbreviated to CBRN defense or CBRN) company– the type of unit that would be on the front line of any zombie outbreak.

Members of the chemical brigade for a local Army National Guard unit want to show they are ready for a zombie apocalypse, even if they have to create one themselves.

Does Halo have a connection to the Umbrella Corp?

No, its not really the Umbrella Corporation…its  the HALO Group in California. They are a medium-sized player in PMC and PSO training and exercises. And Military Times is reporting that they are going to be offering Zombie Training (We here at Last Stand on Zombie Island like to refer to them as Reanimated Human Cadavers, or Ricks) to the military and LE agencies.

From the article; ” Next month, his outfit will incorporate — no kidding — zombies into a disaster-crisis scenario at the company’s annual Counter-Terrorism Summit in San Diego, a five-day event providing hands-on training, realistic demonstrations, lectures and classes geared to more than 1,000 military personnel, law enforcement officials, medical experts, and state and federal government workers.

HALO will take over the 44-acre Paradise Point resort in the city’s popular Mission Bay and create a series of terrorist scenarios, with immersive Hollywood sets including a Middle Eastern village and a pirates’ haven. Retired Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden, a former CIA and National Security Agency director, and Mexico Interior Secretary Alejandro Poiré Romero will speak during the summit, which runs Oct. 30 to Nov. 2.

Barker calls the scenario “Zombie Apocalypse.” That phrase took off last year after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention unveiled a campaign aimed at underscoring the importance of being prepared for major emergencies, natural disasters and pandemics.

New zombie course helps students learn about survival behavior

From Michigan State http://news.msu.edu/story/10412/

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Coming soon, zombies will be invading Michigan State University.

The School of Social Work is offering a one-of-a-kind online course called “Surviving the Coming Zombie Apocalypse – Catastrophes and Human Behavior” that will do a lot more than teach students how to fend off the undead.

Starting May 14 – the first session of the summer 2012 semester – students enrolled in the seven-week course will learn how human behavior and nature change after catastrophic incidences – from the historical to the hypothetical – through a blend of traditional coursework, online forums and a catastrophic event simulation, which will be in the form of a theoretical zombie pandemic.

Aspects of anthropology, sociology and geology, among other disciplines, will be woven into the two-credit course, which will be scored on a traditional 4.0 scale.

“We are using the idea of a zombie apocalypse to attract attention to the important research and science on the topic of ‘Catastrophes and Human Behavior,'” said Glenn Stutzky, social work instructor and creator of the course. “Students will learn about the nature, scope and impact of catastrophic events on individuals, families, societies, civilizations and the Earth itself.”

During the simulation, which is the focus of the first week of class, students will be placed in survivor groups and tasked to work with each other to develop ways to survive the zombie pandemic. As the course continues, so will the simulation, but students also will learn about catastrophes like the Black Death and meteor strikes, and the impact these events had on the planet. During the final days of the course, students in their survivor groups will use what they learned and will face the conclusion of the simulation event.

“Though the topic is serious and worthy of academic study, the challenges presented in surviving a hypothetical zombie pandemic have real-world applications,” Stutzky said. “After all, zombies make everything more interesting.”

Stutzky and a team from Virtual University Design and Technology are using social media to promote the course, including the use of a YouTube channel, Facebook and Twitter.

The course is part of a new venture called Summer Online Electives Initiative in Social Work. It is made up of nine courses meant to appeal to a broader pool of students, as well as provide more accessibility to social work courses for both current MSU students, guest students from other universities and members of the general public.

Oregon Kids Training for Zombie Apocalypse

This week, kids from the Portland metro area are learning important survival skills.

Lucy Holscher: “What you do is there’s like four or five zombies, you’re in a group with your partner, your job is to keep your partner safe.”

But this is not an actual zombie apocalypse. It’s a survival skills camp run by the non-profit Trackers Earth. April Baer visited the camp, and survived to file this report.

Trackers is running several kinds of outdoor-themed camps this winter, with the intent of getting Oregon kids off the couches and outside.

Deis explains, the undead storyline was a natural. “Because, of course, the best place to escape the zombie apocalypse would be the wilderness.”……….
