Wreck of a Corsair in Hawaii
This Vought Corsair sank off the coast of Hawaii Kai in 1946 during a training exercise when the plane ran out of fuel. The pilot bailed out to safety, leaving the plane on the sandy bottom. This is the only wreck in Hawaii that was not intentionally sunk and lay in about 75 feet of water.
The port wing is buried beneath the surface and the starboard wing is exposed to fish and divers alike. The aft hook and wheel is also visible. Sponge and coral have established since the wreck settled.
