Strike one hard working SSGN

After 42 years of silent, steadfast service, the Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Georgia (SSGN 729) returned to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay for the final time on July 27, 2026.

Commissioned during the Cold War as a strategic deterrent and later converted into a premier conventional strike platform, Georgia and her generations of Sailors have made a monumental mark on naval history. She will officially begin her inactivation process on July 31, 2026.

Bravo Zulu to the crew, and welcome home!

Note she has precious topside DDS installed, a rare feature that is actually common to SSGNs, as they can carry four platoons of SEALs (64 operators) in addition to her 154 VLS Tomahawks and a dozen torpedoes for her four tubes.

Georgia originally commissioned as SSBN 729, the fourth Trident-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, at Groton on 11 February 1984, the second ship to carry the name on the NVR after Battleship No. 15 of Great White Fleet fame.

She began her first of 65 SLBM-armed deterrent patrols in January 1985, serving an entire career by the time she was converted to an SSGN in 2004– then really started to have some fun!

I even mention SSGN-729 in my 2012 zombie novel, in the final couple of chapters.

Her motto, which she has more than lived up to, is Furtim, Incurso, Mutatio (Stealth, Attack, Change)

Always nice to see the “Marines back in Submarines” so to speak.

Check out these recent images of Force Reconnaissance Marines from the 2nd Recon Battalion conducting dive operations near the submarine USS Georgia (SSGN-729), in the Mediterranean Sea.

Of course, the Recon Marines are wearing more basic open-circuit skin diving rigs than cool guy closed-circuit Draegers, but training is training.

Plus, they got a chance to CRRC it up from Georgia’s deck, a task that the Marines are spending more time doing going forward with the whole switch from Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAV) to Littoral Craft by units such as the 4th Amtrac Bn.

The old stubborn mule of the SSGN force, Georgia, formerly SSBN-729, is officially homeported in Kings Bay but tends to roam far and wide. For instance, a 100K mile/790-day forward deployment in 2020-22 that included crossing into the Persian Gulf.

Christened back in 1982, she conducted 65 strategic deterrent patrols as a bomber before she was converted to her current cruise missile & commando bus format which she has sported for the past 20 years.

While in the Med as part of the Sixth Fleet, she just got orders for what could be a very busy trip.
