Surviving the Coming Zombie Apocalypse

“We all hope we would be the person who would not leave anyone behind, but we really don’t know.

In times of catastrophes some people find their humanity, while others lose theirs.”- Glenn Stutzky

And Glenn is the driving force behind the course SW290: Surviving the Coming Zombie Apocalypse – Disasters, Catastrophes, and Human Behavior this summer at Michigan State University- School of Social Work

“This award winning, fully online course brings together the latest thinking on how and why humans behave during disasters and catastrophes.

Why do some survive and others don’t? What are the implications for planning, preparedness, and disaster management?

Students in survival groups will face multiple challenges and tasks as they attempt to survive the catastrophic event, escape death, and preserve the future of civilization. For the ability to survive ultimately rests not with the individual but the group”

Free Zombie Book (Did we say, free???)

Yes boys and girls, a good friend of mine, David Forsyth has the first volume of his work “Voyage of the Dead – Book One Sovereign Spirit Saga” up over at amazon for a pretty low price. Like perma-free. $0.00

voyage of the dead

Dave’s a great guy and we worked together on the Outbreak: Visions of the Apocalypse anthology for Permuted Press last summer. While it is not free, sales of that one all go to charity (Direct Relief International).

So check out a zombie book or two.

Before they check you out.

Yes, We have no bananas…

OK, I normally talk about guns, ships, planes, combat, and the coming zombie apocalypse, so why bananas today?

Well…

Remember eating those awesome Gros Michel variety of bananas back in the 1930s? What? you weren’t around back then? Well, don’t worry neither was I. But that’s the thing. The Gros Michel variety, often known as Big Mike, was THE most common banana on the market. They were bigger and thicker than what we eat now (all phallic jokes aside), which is the Cavendish.

Big Mike: big and round like a potato

Big Mike: big and round like a potato

Cavendish: Curved and slim (all of this is sounding too funny, but stick with me)

Bananas, as we know them, cannot reproduce. The ones we eat are sterile hybrids. Like mules. That means they can’t evolve. They don’t spread their seed like other fruits, baby banana trees are taken from cuttings off adult trees– which means every banana we eat, is genetically the same.

Clones.

Which means they can’t evolve away from viruses that prey on them.

This is why the Big Mike is almost extinct (at least in so much as the grocery stores in the US are concerned) and odds are if you were born after 1950 or so– you haven’t ever had one.

You see Mike got taken out by a virus.

The 1923 musical hit “Yes, We Have No Bananas” comes from a shortage of the “Big Mike” bananas, which began with the infestation of Panama disease early in the 20th century

And it’s fixing to happen to the Cavendish apparently.

Is the 10/22 the Perfect Aftermath Gun?

In the realm of being prepared, there is that boogeyman on the horizon that is known as the ‘TEOTWAWKI’ situation. This is one of those things where Mad Max movies, zombie films, and sci-fi books all leave fiction behind and come into sharp reality. Although we haven’t gotten any memos of an upcoming event, we want to know what you think of the good old 10/22 as the perfect gun for when the dust settles.

Is the Glock 17 the Perfect Zombie Gun

For the record, we want to say that zombies are fictional creatures, but just in case we are wrong, you may want to have a good handgun. And we think that the G17 could be just the ticket for when the world gets a little more undead.

Another 50-Year old Cold War Bunker Inspection

In the past few years we have brought you the stories of several 1960s era (Cuban Missile Crisis) fallout shelters built in suburban backyards across the country. Well it turns out that another one has been found.

“For more than a decade after they moved into their house in Neenah, Wisconsin, the Zwick family knew they had a Cold War bunker in their backyard. It was not until 2010 that anyone thought to open the heavy steel hatch, climb down the ladder and explore the 8-foot-by-10-foot chamber that the home’s previous owner had built to protect his family from a nuclear attack.
Floating in five feet of water that had seemed into the bunker were sealed U.S. Army boxed packed with all of the supplies a family would need to survive two weeks underground.”

Yup. although the bunker was flooded, the stuff inside the old ammo cans came out pretty good.
