Virginia Tech to track ‘zombie virus’ at Boy Scout Jamboree

” If researchers from Virginia Tech’s Virginia Bioinformatics Institute have their way, 50,000 Boy Scouts might just turn into zombies as part of an educational game called “Virus Tracker” during the national Boy Scout Jamboree from July 16 to July 22 at Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia.

Virus Tracker was developed by researchers at the Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory to help people understand the spread of disease and the public health response required for disease outbreaks. The data collected by playing Virus Tracker can be used to understand how social contact networks are pathways for transmission of infectious diseases.

Designed to show how disease spreads, Virus Tracker allows participants to use scannable bar codes to “infect” other players. They’ll get points for infecting one another, but they will also strive to become and stay human…”

(Unfortunately, looking at the charts, infection seems to be inevitable in a zombie outbreak)

Preppers use zombies as concept to teach others

“It has been 16 days since the infection reached Maricopa. No traffic lights are working and all cable, WiFi and phone service is dead. The zombies are everywhere, shuffling their feet and moaning throughout abandoned streets.

Maricopa resident Keith Lostritto huddles with his family and neighbors in his boarded up home with a loaded arsenal laid out on the carpet in front of him. He is unafraid. He has been planning for this for years. ..”

Rest in peace Richard Matheson

Sci-fi author and legend Dick Matheson died yesterday at age 87.

Dont remember him? He basically invented zombies with his 1954 work, I Am Legend.

27-1

Lending a feel of reality to his work was the fact that he was also a grunt– having served in the US Army as an infantryman in the ETO during WWII.

He also wrote Stir of Echoes, The Shrinking Man, What Dreams May Come, and dozens of other works.

*He*, was a legend….

Ave Atque Vale, Mr. Matheson.

A to Z Zombie History

A pretty good take on our love of zombies over the past hundred years

“There is a fiend for every fear. The loss of emotional control? The werewolf is here, ready to turn you into a beast. The perils of  physical intimacy? Bare your throat for the tainted kiss of the vampire.

But there’s a deeper terror.

Those monsters only threaten to add something to who you are. The zombie takes what you’ve become — and wipes it away. He’s an erasure of the self. He’s perpetual anonymity. He’s psychic annihilation.

He’s everywhere, too. A quick web search turns up nearly 900 movies that feature the walking dead; more than a third of those came out in the last five years (and that’s not even counting zombie video games, TV shows and novels).

Brad Pitt’s “World War Z,” opening next week, is the latest and most elaborate, boasting a major star and wide-screen scenes of a global epidemic (and the biggest cannibal-cadaver budget ever, at roughly $200 million). It’s part of the latest trend: The apocalyptic zombie.”

Real Life Zombie Stalked Graveyards for Nine Years

From the Daily Mail

Just a little bit creepy

“A man diagnosed with a rare zombie condition today told of his nine years of hell thinking he was the living dead.

Graham Harrison, 57, was convinced he had died despite a botched suicide attempt – and even took to hanging around in graveyards.

He believed his brain had ‘fried’ after trying to electrocute himself and must be dead, even though he was still breathing.

Doctors diagnosed Cotard’s Syndrome – otherwise known as walking corpse syndrome – one of the rarest diseases in the world, affecting just a few hundred people.

Delusional sufferers believe they are dead, or that parts of their body no longer exist, and often die from starvation because they feel they no longer have to eat.

Graham, a former water contractor from Exeter, Devon, woke up after a botched suicide attempt amazed he was able to talk – because he was convinced he had no brain.

” Cases of Cotard’s Syndrome date back to 1788 but it was formally identified by French neurologist Jules Cotard in 1880.
Among the handful of cases over the years was a 53-year-old woman in New York who in 2008 claimed that she stank like rotting fish because she was dead.

Like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, Cotard’s is another form of delusional psychosis, the only self-certifiable form of its kind.
Those with this condition often describe a loss of blood, organs and/or body parts. This distorted reality is caused by a malfunction in an area of the brain called the fusiform gyrus, which recognizes faces, and also in the amygdala, an almond-shaped set of neurons that processes your emotions.”

Tour inside a 1960s Personal Fallout Shelter…complete with Tang

A South Florida family found an almost perfectly preserved fallout shelter in their backyard dating from the 1960s complete with Tang, a fallout meter, and Toilet paper. It’s nice to see that even with flawed fifty year old designs (the shelter had 1-2 feet of water inside it when opened), that they are still viable after a half century. Keep that in mind preppers!

Cally ARNG Goes Head to Head with LA Riot…

A pretty good article written by a California National Guard Captain who experienced the sharp, woodland camo tip of the 1992 LA Riots is up over at Breitbart

From the article, “Flyers urging violence against law enforcement in service of the “insurrection” were commonplace during the riots.  The flyers were written and printed by Communist organizations—which seemed ironic, given the fall of the Berlin Wall only two-and-a-half years before.  Strangely enough, the El Salvadoran Communist guerrilla group FMLN (Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front) has an ongoing presence in Los Angeles, where they participate in the city’s annual May Day parade, carrying their red banners.

On May 3, with the military taking a lower profile, gang members began to show more defiance.  Rumors were flying around that the military had no ammunition or wasn’t allowed to shoot.  We were very concerned about what might happen the next night when Mayor Tom Bradley was expected to lift the nighttime curfew.

As fate would have it, a gang member wannabe tried to run over a team of Guardsmen at a checkpoint.   On his third pass to try to kill the soldiers, they fired 10 rounds at the tires of the onrushing car.  He pressed on towards the checkpoint.  So, the soldiers shifted fire, killing him with two bullets to the head and one in the shoulder.  The next morning, the gang members wouldn’t even look us in the eye as we made a limited number of patrols.  They knew the Guard could shoot to kill.”

Zombie Survival cheat sheet

The Manila Standard  has the following cheat sheet to get through the zompocalypse:

1. Pack the essentials. Water, food, and first-aid kit – anything that will ensure your survival.

2. Choose your weapon. Admit it. Zombies are not the most logical creatures. They will do anything – anything – to get a bite out of your flesh and brains. No matter how anti-violence we might be, sometimes, a trusty bat to swing away the undead is not so horrible.

3. A family that runs away from zombies together, stays together. Like any other calamity, it is better to set a meeting place with your family, in case you are separated.

4. Stay elevated. Because higher ground gives you a better advantage.

5. Avoid contact with zombies. AT. ALL. COSTS.

6. If all else fails, run –  and run until you cannot run anymore.
