Veteran Military Bolt Rifles Still in Use

The military rifle is one of my favorite subspecies of firearm ever designed. Bolt-action rifles especially fit this bill. These hardy veterans are classified since about 1947 as being ‘obsolete,’ replaced by the full sized battle rifle and the assault rifle in modern use. However, these old soldiers still see themselves in use around the world. Of course, there are multiple honor guards in almost every modern country where sparkling clean Springfield 1903s, laminated Mosin 91/30s, and even the occasional Mauser and Enfield are seen as ceremonial honor guard pieces, but besides these, there are still combat units that carry legacy bolt-action rifles. Let’s take a look at these long serving pieces still holding the line.

The Mosin M44 Scout Project

One of the last incarnations of the Mosin was the humble M44, was a cut down version designed to be carried by Soviet Frontoviki in the last years of World War Two. These were made in Polish, Hungarian, Rumanian, and Russian M44 versions, as well as by the Chinese 53.

I had acquired a few Russian M44’s back when they ran for about $79 a couple years ago. Now they are pretty hard to find except from individual sellers. However, Aim Surplus and J&G are still selling the Chinese version for about $149.

The worst of my M44s has a dark but serviceable bore with acceptable rifling. Its stock is ugly, with lots of scuffs and a few light splits and gouges. It’s a 91/30 cut down job with mismatched serials that mainly came from Tula Arsenal. It’s not a collector so let’s not pretend I ruined something here by doing this build. With this in mind, I spent a weekend making a Mosin 44 Scout. For more of a challenge, the all-in price for this was set as low as possible.

Obamas Secret Army (and Navy)

An article from the Daily Beast looks at the Obama Administration’s use of the Special Operations Command whose budget had doubled and mission has quadrupled in the past few years.

SEAL snipers on the fantail of the USS Bainbridge were in position to shoot the pirates. But with the covered lifeboat bobbing on the water, it was still difficult to get clean shots. They attached night-vision scopes to their rifles and waited. At one point, two of the pirates came into plain sight. The sharpshooters could see a third pirate through a window pointing his gun at Captain Phillips. Each sniper fired a single round, and it was over. Three shots, three dead pirates. A SEAL assault team boarded the lifeboat and took Phillips to safety…..

Superbowl Sniper Nest

INDIANAPOLIS — Photos of a designated marksman’s perch high above Lucas Oil Field circulated Wednesday amid cries they were “disturbing” and demands for an explanation. (hat tip Policeone)

Reports from NESN and others said the photos, which show a sniper’s nest overlooking the stadium that housed Super Bowl XLVI, had “no known origins.” A couple of them include a man behind the weapon with his face digitally blacked out, and details in the images — clear views of the endzone, for example — suggest they’re unlikely to be a hoax, Deadspin reported.

The commentary that ensued online decried the photographer’s choice to snap an apparently boastful shot of a weapon.

“It’s not really all that encouraging to know the man operating the deadly weapon thought it might be cool to take a couple of snapshots,” NESN quipped, but others who weren’t as fazed pointed out that since the photos bear Indianapolis Police Department insignia, “bad guys” don’t appear to be behind them, and increasing security at high-profile events like the Super Bowl isn’t new.

Although speculation continues, CBS12 says the shots first appeared on the Facebook page of U.S. Tactical Supply Inc., and if that’s the case, an accompanying message suggests the vendor authorized the release of the images.

Stop giving Marines Cameras
