Task Force Spaghetti, RIMPAC Adjacent

While Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC) ’24 off Hawaii — the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise– just wrapped up its 29th outing since it was established in 1971, one that included 29 nations, 40 surface ships, three submarines, 14 national land forces, more than 150 aircraft, and 25,000 personnel– there was also another large exercise going on at the same time in the Pacific that gets very little attention.

And it included an Italian carrier task force, something never before seen in those waters.

Going back to 1981, the Royal Australian Air Force-led Exercise Pitch Black 24 has grown increasingly over the past four decades.

This year’s event was the biggest ever, including 20 participating nations and over 140 aircraft from around the globe. While typically shore-based, with aircraft from the U.S. (F-22s), Singapore, Indonesia, India, Japan, Britain, France, Germany, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Spain, Brunei, New Zealand, and Canada flying in, the Italians showed up with a carrier task force, 31st Grupponavale, centered around the 27,000-ton aircraft carrier Cavour (C550).

Cavour’s embarked air group blended six F-35B STOVL Lightnings and another six legacy AV-8B/TAV-8B Harrier II Plus aircraft of GRUPAER (Gruppo Supporto Aerei Imbarcati della Marina Militare) Lupi, as well as EH101 and SH90 helicopters. She has hangar and deck space for 20~ aircraft, so this is about right.

Cavour was escorted by the 7,000-ton Bergamini-class ASW FREMM frigate Alpino (F-594).

In all, Cavour’s group chalked up 70 flight hours and 20 missions during Pitch Black, including refueling and air-to-air interaction with aircraft belonging to nine of the 20 participating nations.

This led to some great formation shots with Cavour and Alpino underway in the Coral Sea and an RAAF E-7A Wedgetail, F-18F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler; Italian Harrier and F-35B; Indian Su-30MKI, Philippine FA-50PH, Luftwaffe Typhoon, and JASDF F-2As overhead. If you told a circa 1942 USN vet this would happen one day they would surely scratch their head.

The Most Beautiful Ship in the World

Meanwhile, another of Cavour’s escorts on her 2024 Pacific cruise, the 5,800-ton Thaon di Revel-class offshore patrol vessel ITS Montecuccoli (P432), was detached to participate in RIMPAC and met up at sea with the “most beautiful ship in the world,” the Italian navy’s historic nave scuola (training ship) Amerigo Vespucci (A5312) which was inbound for Honolulu from Los Angeles on her own independent cruise.

This led to some amazing shots of the two in a series PASSEX maneuvers.

Built at the Royal Shipyard of Castellammare di Stabia and running some 329 feet in length over the bowsprit, Vespucci’s main mast towers 177 feet into the air and, when fully rigged, she carries up to 26 canvas sails.

Vespucci recently celebrated her 90th birthday and set sail last July on a 20-month, 40,000-mile world cruise that will see the Italian ship dock at 31 ports in 28 nations, visiting five continents.

Her crew and cadets made sure to pay respect and honors to USS Arizona during their visit to Pearl. 

Wombat Gun

Note Fyfe’s camouflaged weapon, the ubiquitous Springfield Armory-designed 40mm M79 grenade launcher. The single-shot break-action breechloader could be fired at ranges anywhere from 30 meters (the minimum distance to arm the grenade) out to 400 meters for indirect fire. It could be surprisingly accurate against bunker/vehicle-sized objectives.

Known by a host of nicknames among American troops in Vietnam including the “Thumper” and the “Blooper” (read “The Phantom Blooper” by Gustav Hasford), Ozzies tended to label it the “Wombat gun” for their own regional reasons.

From 1962 to 1973, more than 60,000 Australians served in the Vietnam War. Some 523 died as a result of the war (including no less than 28 men of 3RAR) and almost 2,400 were wounded

Farewell, HMAS Anzac (for now)

With her replacement– the planned first general-purpose frigate– still at least six years down the road, the Royal Australian Navy decommissioned the lead ship of its license-built Blohm & Voss MEKO 200 design, HMAS Anzac (FFH 150), completing 28 years of service on 18 May.

Ten 4,000-ton Anzac-class frigates (eight Australian, two for the Royal New Zealand Navy) were built by Tenix Defence Systems (now BAE Systems) at the company’s Williamstown yard in Melbourne between 1993 and 2006.

Subsequent Phase 2A/2B and 4B upgrades saw her SPS-49 radar replaced with a distinctive CEAFAR phased-array radar mast which gave the ”First Lady of the Fleet” a very peculiar appearance.

She was the third such ship to carry the name of the famed Australian and New Zealand Army Corps in the RAN, after a Great War-era Parker-class destroyer leader that served under the Australian flag in the 1920s and a Battle-class destroyer that served in the 1950s and 60s.

For sure, the name will return.

You wouldn’t know it to look at her, but by this point in the war, this Australian LSI(L) had captured 22 ships, a train, and a floating dock in addition to her service as one of the country’s first amphibs.

Meet Kanimbla

Our subject, named for the Kanimbla Valley in New South Wales, was ordered by the Australian McIlwraith, McEacharn & Co from the famed shipyard of Harland & Wolff, Belfast– the same people that built the Titanic— in 1933.

Intended for passenger service between Cairns and Fremantle with 203 First Class and 198 Cabin Cass passengers, she was delivered in 1936.

She was constructed complete with a fully operational radio broadcasting station that would broadcast ashore as she moved around the continent. The equipment was manufactured by AWA in Australia and had been shipped to Ireland for installation while the ship was still under construction.

As detailed by Australian Old Time Radio, “Regular broadcasts commenced on 6,010 KHz., with one-hour programs several evenings each week, with their announcer and singer Eileen Foley. They also had a female orchestra with a pianist, violinist, and cellist performing on air, and at nightly on-board dances.”

Armed Merchant Cruiser

Then, with the outbreak of war, MV Kanimbla became HMS Kanimbla (F23), requisitioned on 5 September 1939 and so commissioned the following month. Her role– outfitted with seven 6-inch guns, two 3-inch high-angle AA guns, a pair of Lewis guns, and some depth charge launchers (but no sound gear or radar)– would be that of an armed merchant cruiser.

While officially a Royal Navy warship, she had an almost exclusively Australian crew of 342, commanded by the redoubtable CDR Frank E. Getting, RAN. Following the installation of her armament at Garden Island Dockyard, she left Sydney on 13 December 1939 for Hong Kong where she took up station, tasked with looking for Axis blockade runners and raiders.

Curiously, at this early stage of the war, she still carried her peacetime McIlwraith McEachern livery, despite her serious armament.

One of her primary roles in this period was that of convoy escort.

In all, in the 20 months between WS 002S, which Kanimbla joined on 8 August 1940, and when she left OW 005/1 on 18 March 1943, our big auxiliary cruiser rode shotgun on no less than 22 convoys. These were primarily slow Indian Ocean troop and material convoys of the WS (Suez Canal to Bombay), BP (Bombay to the Persian Gulf), BA/AB (Bombay to Aden/Aden to Bombay), OW (Australia to Ceylon), and US/SU (Australia to Colombo and the Suez/vice versa) variety.

The most important of these was the Schooner convoy which carried two brigades of irreplicable combat-experienced Australian troops back home from the Middle East on 23 June-7 August 1942, during the height of the invasion scare from Japan– while Port Moresby’s harbor was under Japanese air raids and the Imperial Navy was celebrating sinking four Allied cruisers at the Battle of Savo Island, to include HMAS Canberra with our good Capt. Getting, Kanimbla’s plankowning skipper, in command.

Nonetheless, our subject took two important breaks from her convoy duties during this era.

Rounding up Scandinavians

While steaming near Japan in March 1940, Kanimbla came across the SS Vladimir Mayakovsky, a 3,972-ton Soviet ChGMP steamer out of Odesa that was originally built as the Bela Kun. Smelling something off about the vessel as it A) tried to run for it, (B) was loaded with 4,582 tons of copper and 215 tons of molybdenite, and C) the Soviets at the time at war with the Finns and in occupation of half of Poland and the entirety of the Baltic States, Kanimbla seized the ship and, five days later, was ordered to hand it over to French cruiser Lamotte Picque who forcibly interned it and its 40 member crew at Saigon.

Mayakovsky and her crew sweated it out at Saigon under French guns for six months then was allowed to leave after the local administration relieved its cargo of coffee and ore. The ship somehow survived WWII and was only removed from Soviet service in 1967.

Following the April 1940 German invasion and occupation of the kingdoms of Denmark and Norway, Kanimbla was ordered to the coastal waters of China to intercept merchant ships flying those flags and send them, with polite yet armed detachments aboard, to Hong Kong so they would come under Allied control.

The captured ships, most scooped up at the mouth of the Yangtse River (near Shanghai), included 10 Norwegians: freighters D/S Agnes (1311 grt), D/S Hafthor (1,594 grt), D/S Corona (3264 grt), D/S Talisman (4,765 tons), D/S Wilford (2158 grt), D/S Tonjer (3268 gt), D/S Sheng Hwa (5492 grt), D/S Norwegian, D/S Sygna (3881 gt), and D/S Gabon (4651 grt); as well as one Dane: the beautiful 1,462-ton cable ship SS Store Nordiske of the Great Northern Telegraph Company.

To this was later added the Norwegian flagged Wallam & Co freighter D/S Dah Pu (1974 grt).

True to form, most went on to sail for the Allied cause– typically on charter to the Ministry of War Transport, managed by British India SN Co. Ltd.– with many subsequently lost to enemy action.

Iran

Operation Countenance, the Allied effort to invade and rapidly occupy the neutral nation of Iran, with the Soviets taking the north and the British the south, kicked off on 25 August 1941.

The Persian Gulf side of the operation, led by Commodore Cosmo Graham, aimed to seize the ports of Bandar Shahpur, Abadan, and Khorramshahr with a force that consisted simply of Kanimbla— which was the largest warship in the squadron– assisted by seven light escorts (sloops, corvettes, armed yachts, trawlers, et. al).

Up the river Khar Musa, the Gulf railway terminus port of Bandar Shahpur (now Bandar-e Emam Khomeyni) had a pair of Iranian gunboats watching over eight German and Italian merchant ships that had been sheltering there in large part since 1939. This was tasked to Force B (Bishop) under the command of Captain (later RADM) W. L. G. Adams, OBE, RN.

In an operation overnight on 24/25 August codenamed Bishop, Kanimbla, with Capt. Adams and 300 men of two companies the Indian 3/10th Baluch Regiment embarked on the 11th, and accompanied by HM Indian Sloop Lawrence (L83) and the HM Armed Trawler Arthur Kavanagh, crept up the river and made their surprise entrance just before dawn. Two small tugs and several local dhows which had been “requisitioned” to shuttle around groups of Baluch troopers and armed Australian Jack Tars, disguised in local mufti, preceded the group.

The German and Italian merchies were still in their full-color peacetime livery, and their crews enjoyed themselves in the backwaters of old Persia.

Captured outright were the 331-ton Italian-built Iranian gunboats Chahbaaz (Shahbaaz) and Karkas, slow Fiat diesel-powered 169-footers that mounted 3-inch guns. Likewise, the Commonwealth force easily seized the government railway jetty complete with a train and floating dock that were the property of the Iranian navy. That night, the surrendered Iranian officers, led by the local port captain, dined aboard Kanimbla and were treated to whisky and cheroots afterward.

The gunboats would spend the rest of the war (dubbed Hira and Moti) as training and patrol ships at Bombay with the Royal Indian Navy then were later repatriated to the Shah in 1946.

Scuttled were five German Deutsche Dampfshiffahrts Gesellschaft (Hansa Line) freighters: MS Weißenfels (7866 grt), MS Wildenfels (6224 grt) — which was later refloated, repaired, and entered British service as SS Empire RajaMS Marienfels (7575 grt) which was repaired and turned into SS Empire Rani, and MS Sturmfels (6,288 tons) likewise repaired to British service as SS Empire Kumari.

One ship in particular, the German freighter MS Hohenfels (7,862 grt) was involved in a spectacular save by Kanimbla’s crew.

Sydney Morning Herald, 20 September 1941 reported the event:

R.A.N. MEN SAVE NAZI SHIPS Daring in Iran LONDON, Sept. 19 (A.A.P.). Australian naval ratings, assisted by Indians, carried out a daring exploit when seven of eight Axis ships were saved from scuttling at Bandar Shahpur (Iran) after the British landing, reports the Tehran correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.”

The Navy prepared an expeditionary force consisting of dhows, tugs, and launches. The Australians and Indians had been practicing old-time tactics of boarding, including the use of grappling irons. The little fleet set out before dawn, and when it stole in, the lookout in the nearest Axis ship, the Hohenfels (7,862 tons) did not suspect anything until it was too late.

The Australians and Indians scrambled aboard the ships, and groping in the dark holds, turned off the sea cocks, plugged the holes, cut the wires to gelignite charges, and dowsed deliberately-lit fires. All this was done so quickly that there were no British casualties. Six of the seven ships saved are at present being repaired in India. The seventh is being salvaged. The eighth was burnt out.”

Hohenfels aground off Bandur Shapur in August 1941, with her pre-war colors intact. Captured and salvaged by HMS Kanimbla, she went to work for the Admiralty as Empire Kamal 1941, then Van Ruisdael 1944, and Ridderkerk 1947, before she was scrapped in Hong Kong in 1962.

Also put on the bottom by its crew at Bandur Shapur was the 5,225-ton Italian Società Anonima di Navigazione freighter Caboto (raised and dubbed SS Empire Kohinoor), a fate shared by the handsome American-built Enrico Insom tanker Barbara (3,065 grt) which was rebuilt as SS Empire Taj. The SAN Garibaldi tanker Bronte (4769 gt) was wrecked.

Besides the assembled crews of the eight Axis vessels, a battalion-sized force of German civilians was scooped up ashore. As noted by Christopher Buckley, the Commonwealth troops and sailors “had the satisfaction of rounding up more than 300 German tourists, all clad in the sports coats and the grey flannel trousers of conscientious holidaymakers, all by the curious coincidence attracted to this little port ‘by the excellence of the bathing and the purity of the air.'”

LSI Blues

The Australian military’s first amphibious warfare ships were the three Landing Ship, Infantry (large), or LSI(L)s: HMAS Kanimbla, HMAS Manoora, and HMAS Westralia. Whereas these liners had given great service (as seen above) as armed merchant cruisers, by 1943 the war in the Pacific had shifted to an island-hopping campaign in which the Ozzies would need troop carriers that could put infantry ashore in the littoral.

This led to the above cruisers being shifted to the RAN directly (hence the HMAS rather than the HMS), repainted in a camo scheme, given room for 800 to 1,200 embarked troops, and a way to land them in the form of 24 landing craft, vehicle, personnel, (LCVP)s carried in large double davits, each capable of carrying a platoon to the beach. These craft were hull numbered to the ship, for instance, with Kanimbla’s listed as K1 through K24.

The Admiralty loved LSIs, and converted some 40 of them by the end of the war including several operated by Canada (HMCS Prince David and HMCS Prince Henry) and even one by the Royal New Zealand Navy (HMNZS Monowai). As in the case of the trio of Australian LSI(L)s, most were former passenger liners.

In April 1943, our subject began her conversion and recommissioned as HMAS Kanimbla on 1 July 1943.

With her 6-inch guns no longer needed, Kanimbla traded them in for a couple of 3-inch AAA guns, a single 4-incher over the stern as a stinger, and a mix of Oerlikon, Pom Pom, and Bofors mounts to help ward off Japanese aircraft.

Kanimbla and her two half-sisters, augmented by members of the country’s new Beach Commando units, went on to participate in amphibious landings at Hollandia, Morotai, Leyte Gulf, Lingayen Gulf, Brunei, and Balikpapan.

Most of that time was as part of the Allied 7th PHIBFOR, and she dutifully submitted war diary reports in USN format which are now in the National Archives.

She earned battle honors for “New Guinea 1944″, “Leyte Gulf 1944”, “Lingayen Gulf 1945”, “Borneo 1945”, and “Pacific 1945″, ignoring her key role in Operation Bishop in 1941, her two years of convoy duty, and her freighter harvesting in 1940. Apart from capturing 22 ships she also steamed more than 470,000 miles during the war.

Post-war, her camo stripped off and guns landed, she settled into a two-year run as the government’s shuttle service, taking Australian troops around the Pacific for occupation duty, and then returning them home.

Speaking of returning home, she also carried demobilized Tongan troops back to their archipelago and, eventually, would repatriate interned Japanese citizens back to their shell-shocked homeland.

Her final mission in government service was to sail from Sydney in late 1948, bound for Britain carrying the RAN crew that would bring back the new Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney.

On Kanimbla’s return voyage to Australia, released from her contract, she called at Genoa and embarked 432 Italian bachelors destined for Melbourne and embarked on the next chapter of her career.

Back to Peace

The only Australian-registered ship to play a role in the migrant trade, Kanimbla spent much of her time between 1947 and 1951 shuttling displaced European immigrants, between their port of entry (Perth) and Port Melbourne where they would be processed and assigned work duties on two year passes.

Then came a decade of commercial trade around the island continent. Her swan song. By this time she was configured for 231 First Class and 125 Second Class for coastal runs, or and 371 One Class cabins for longer cruises.

As noted by Freemantle Ports, “Kanimbla was the largest and last liner to be built for the Sydney – Fremantle service which she plied during the summer months. In winter, Kanimbla operated a service between Melbourne, Sydney and Queensland.”

She continued in this role with Westralia, Duntroon, and Manoora, until eventually, she was the final in the trade.

Westralia and Duntroon were laid up by 1959 and, in 1961, Kanimbla and Manoora followed.

In 1961, Kanimbla was sold to the Pacific Transport Company chartered several times over, renamed TSMV Oriental Queen. She spent the next three years carrying Islamic pilgrims from Indonesia to Jeddah and back on charter to the Indonesian government. Then came a more familiar kind of route service.

TSMV Oriental Queen began to operate a program of cruises between Australia, New Zealand, and Japan and during one stay in Yokohama, she was used as a floating hotel for Australian and New Zealand visitors to the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Her accommodation now included 4 suites, as well as single, twin, triple, and four-berth cabins.

TSMV Oriental Queen soon became a popular sight in both New Zealand and Australia and became a popular means of crossing the Tasman Sea to and from Australia. As a cruise ship, she offered economical fares. Thus being a hit with both the younger and older generations.

With her cruises so popular it was decided to fit her with an outdoor pool and a Lido Deck, which enhanced her even further as a cruise ship. She also operated several Pacific cruises during 1965 and 1966. Oriental Queen was a regular visitor to both Auckland and Sydney.

Shifting to an even more basic Honolulu and Los Angeles and Yokohama to Guam runs in 1967, she sailed her last in 1973 and was then broken up for scrap in Taiwan.

Epilogue

Her bell is preserved in the Australian National Maritime Museum, which also has several pieces of maritime art depicting our girl.

Kanimbla is depicted arriving in Hong Kong to commence duties with the British Royal Navy under the command of Royal Australian Navy Commander F E Getting. There are also several monuments and markers around the country dedicated to her memory.

In so much as amphibious warfare, once the Royal Australian Navy got rid of its trio of WWII-converted LSIs in 1949, they replaced them with a half dozen small Mark 3 LSTs borrowed from the Royal Navy which would remain in service until 1955. The job shifted to the Army in 1959, accomplished by four LSM-1 class ships picked up surplus from the U.S. Navy. These LSMs, named after Australian generals, operated through Vietnam and were disposed of in 1975.

The RAN only got back into the big ‘phib game in 1994 by picking up a pair of low-mileage former USN Newport class LSTs, which were recast as the Kanimbla class Landing Platform Amphibious (LPAs). With that, USS Saginaw (LST 1188) became the second HMAS Kanimbla (L 51) while her sister USS Fairfax County (LST 1193) became the second HMAS Manoora (L 52). The two served until 2011, replaced by the Bay-class landing ship dock HMAS Choules and two large Canberra-class landing helicopter docks.

Speaking of ANZAC

With ANZAC Day upon up– the national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Diggers and Kiwis “who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations” and “the contribution and suffering of all those who have served,”– for those in that region keep in mind the rule of thumb when it comes to wearing medals and Rosemary in civilian attire (coats, please) for the occasion.

Remember, one’s own medals are on the left, and family medals are on the right.

Freemantle days with the BPF

As part of AUKUS, the Royal Navy is set to forward-deploy one of its precious seven nuclear attack submarines (SSN) to Freemantle from around 2027. Of course, this has all happened before.

Here we see two Royal Navy T class submarines in Freemantle, Australia in 1945, outboard of a light cruiser, while American submarines and a sub tender are off in the distance.

The closest T-boat, with her crew busy working on her 4-inch gun and loading supplies, has her name board out of view but the second is HM Submarine Thorough (P 324).

Commissioned at Vickers in March 1944, Thorough was posted to the Far East in July, conducting her first 5 war patrols from Trincomalee, then shifted to Freemantle in March 1945 along with the general move into the region by the British Pacific Fleet. It was from the Western Australian base that she conducted Patrols Nos. 6-8.

However, Thourogh by far used her forward 4-inch mount, 20mm stern Oerlikon cannon, and a trio of .303 machine guns more.

In August 1945, in company with HMS Taciturn, which may be the second T-class boat in the picture, Thorough attacked Japanese shipping and shore targets off northern Bali, sinking a coaster and a sailing vessel with gunfire, bringing her wartime total to 40 “kills” all via surface gun actions.

She survived the war, completed the first circumnavigation by a RN submarine in 1957, and was decommissioned in 1962, scrapped at Dunston on Tyne.

Freemantle, ahoy!

In the late 1930s and early 1940s, the idea to keep the Japanese Combined Fleet fenced in its home waters was through investing a lot in submarines. Admiral Hart’s Asiatic Squadron, based in the Philippines, had no capital ships and just a few old cruisers and destroyers, but it did have subs– 29 of them!

As noted in IJNH:

Following his arrival as CinCAF in 1939, Hart had steadily increased the number of submarines assigned to his small fleet from six to seventeen, including the first modern fleet-type boats. As the war clouds gathered in November 1941, another squadron of twelve modern fleet boats with their submarine tender Holland sailed into Manila Bay from Pearl Harbor as reinforcements.

Likewise, the Dutch spent a bunch of guilders in buying Koloniën (“colonial”) submarines for use in barring the door to the Dutch East Indies.

Of course, events soon proved that almost nothing was enough to stop the Japanese juggernaut in December 1941-April 1942 and (almost) all of these boats soon found themselves forced to withdraw to the best friendly option available at the time— Freemantle in Western Australia.

Freemantle was a submarine hub in the West Pac during WWII, with Allied boats of all stripes including British and Dutch vessels, mixing with locals and Americans. In all, some 170 Allied subs at one time or another passed through Fremantle between 1941 and 1945.

In fact, during the war, no less than 127 American submarines operated out of Fremantle at one time or another, carrying out 353 patrols. Added to this were 10 Dutch boats and, after August 1944, an increasing number of British Pacific Fleet boats. All told the Allies mounted something like 416 submarine patrols from Fremantle during the war.

“From 1943 to 1945 Fremantle-based boats sank over 273,000 tons of enemy tankers as well as 19 destroyers, 16 frigates, 4 minesweepers, 9 submarine chasers, and 6 patrol craft.”

And, in this edition of Everything Old is New Again, an American sub-tender is headed to HMAS Stirling, just outside of Freemantle.

From Navy Times:

The Navy plans to conduct its first-ever submarine maintenance work in Australia this summer using the sub tender Emory S. Land, with 30 Australian sailors embarked to learn how to repair the Virginia class of submarine.

This step will help establish a nuclear-powered attack submarine maintenance capability at the HMAS Stirling naval base in Western Australia in the next few years as part of the trilateral AUKUS arrangement.

Above we see the 542-class tank landing ship USS Meeker County (LST-980) arriving at San Diego, California, on 6 September 1970, capping a four-year stint in Vietnam where she, just a few months before, had survived an attempted mining by a VC dive team. Note that her guns– including WWII-era Bofors– are covered and she is carrying much topside cargo to include vehicles and cranes.

The Normandy veteran was laid down 80 years ago this month, saw lots of service in a few different wars, and was among the very last of her class in U.S. Naval service.

The 542s

A revolutionary concept that, by and large, went a long way to win WWII (and later turn the tables in Korea) was the LST. Designed to beach their bows at the surf line and pull themselves back off via a combination of rear anchor winching and reverse prop work, they were big and slow, earning them the invariable nicknames of “Large Slow Target” or “Last Ship (to) Tokyo.”

While a few early designs were built by the British (the Maracaibo and Boxer classes) it wasn’t until the Royal Navy placed a wish list with the U.S. for 200 LST (2) type vessels that the Americans got into the landing tank ship design in a big way.

This general 1,800-ton, 327-foot vessel, powered (eventually) by two easily maintained GM EMD locomotive diesels, was ultimately built in a whopping 1,052 examples between 1942 and 1945. They could carry around 120 troops, which could be landed by as many as a half-dozen davit-carried Higgins boats, but their main claim to fame was in being able to tote almost 1,500 tons of cargo and vehicles on their tank deck for landing ashore.

Built across three different subclasses (390 LST-1 type, 51 LST-491 type, and 611 LST-542) in nine different yards spread across the country– including five “cornfield shipyards” in the Midwest, then shipped via river to the coast– our humble “gator” was of the latter type.

The 542s, while using the same general hull and engineering plant, were equipped with an enclosed navigation bridge, a large 4,000 gal per day saltwater distilling plant, and a heavier armament (1 3″/50 DP open mount, 2 twin 40mm Bofors w/Mk.51 directors, 4 single Bofors, and 12 20mm Oerlikon) than previous members of the class. This, however, dropped their maximum cargo load from 2,100 tons as carried by previous sisters, down to “only” 1,900.

The first to enter service, LST-542, was commissioned on 29 February 1944, while the last completed was LST-1152, commissioned on 30 June 1945. Now that is production, baby!

Meet LST-980

Laid down on 9 December 1943, at Boston Navy Yard, LST-980 was constructed in just 79 days to be commissioned on 26 February 1944. T

hen came two months of shakedown and post-delivery refits before she left, packed with equipment, bound for England where “the big show” was soon to start.

Touring Beachside France

After leaving Southend on the afternoon of 5 June, on D-Day, LST-980, along with sisters LST-543, 981, 982, and 983, made up Flotilla 17, Group 52, Division 103, under CDR William J. Whiteside as commodore.

The group brought their loads, elements of the British Army, successfully to Juno Beach in the afternoon of the 6th.

Part of L Force, they carried the British 7 Armoured Division and 51 Division along with parts of both I Corps and XXX Corps.

After reloading, on 7 June, while carrying elements of the 1st British Army Corps to the No. 102 Beach area on Sword Beach, LST-980 was the subject of several low-level German air attacks, one of which hit the gator with two small (125 pound) (SC50?) bombs, neither of which seemed to have had enough time/distance to arm. The second passed through the main deck and continued into the water. The first, however, likewise passed through the main deck but came to rest in a truck parked on the tank deck.

This problem was carefully addressed by four engineers (LT JHB Monday, SGT H. Charnley, CPL J. McAninly, LCPL F. Crick) of 1 Electrical & Mechanical Section, 282 General Transport Company, who gingerly picked it up, placed it on a field stretcher, carried it to the opened bow doors, and deep-sixed it. While DANFS reports one killed in this incident, other sources note there were no personnel casualties and only minor damage.

Several of her sisters would not be as lucky.

LST-376 was sunk by German E-boats off Normandy on 9 June 1944, LST-499, LST-496, and LST-523 were lost to German mines between 8 June and 19 June; and LST-921 was torpedoed by U-764 on 14 August.

Speaking of August, look at this report from LST-980 filed in September, covering her continued operations on the England to France cross-channel run. Among the more interesting spots are narrowly avoiding German coastal batteries on occupied Gurnsey Island while loaded with artillery shells, shipping 167 U.S. Army vehicles (including 25 tanks and two batteries of field artillery) and 521 soldiers to the Continent while returning to England with 1,106 captured German personnel (guarded at a ratio of 200 EPOWs to 9 MPs) including 30 female nurses.

By February 1945, with the prospect of further amphibious landings in the European Theatre unlikely, LST-980 was sent back to the East Coast to serve as a training ship at Little Creek for troops headed to the Pacific for the ongoing push on Tokyo and the Navy/Coast Guardsmen that would carry them. Our gator was there on VE-Day and VJ-Day.

In April 1949, just three weeks after NATO was formed, LST-980 sailed for a six-month stint with the 6th Fleet in the Med at a time when Europe was still very much in a post-war recovery, with the Cold War dawning.

Records indicate her crew was eligible for a battle star for the Invasion of Normandy from 6 June to 25 June 1944 and later a Navy Occupation Medal for service in Europe from 19 May to 19 September 1949.

When it came to her sisters, no less than 41 were lost during the conflict including six in the so-called West Loch Disaster, two at Slapton Sands to German E-boats during Exercise Tiger, seven to Japanese aircraft and kamikaze, six to Japanese and German submarines, and one (LST-282) to a German glider bomb

Post-war service

In the period immediately following VJ-Day, the Navy rapidly shed their huge LST fleet, giving ships away to allies, selling others on the commercial market (they proved a hit for ferry conversions, as coasters in remote areas, and use in the logging industry), and laying up most of the remainder. More than 100 vessels that were still under contract but not completed were canceled. 

By August 1946, only 480 of the 1,011 survivors were still in some sort of active U.S. Navy service with many of those slated for conversion, mothballs, or disposal.

Many had been reclassified to auxiliary roles as diverse as PT-boat tenders (AGP), repair ships (ARL), battle damage repair ships (ARB), self-propelled barracks ships (APB), cargo ships (AKS), electronic parts supply ships (AG), and salvage craft tenders (ARST). Others, like LST-822, were transferred to the civilian mariner-run Military Sea Transportation Service and traded their USS for USNS. Heck, some had even served during the war as mini-aircraft carriers, toting Army Grasshoppers.

However, LST-980 remained on active service through the Korean conflict, where she was semi-exiled to support the Army and Air Force’s polar basing efforts in Greenland, carrying supplies through the barely thawed Baffin Bay in the summers of 1951, 1952, and 1953, earning a trifecta of Blue Noses for her crew.

Despite careful sounding of the landing route to the beach at Thule, LST-980 settled on a huge underwater boulder puncturing two of the ship’s fuel tanks and disabling two of the three ship’s generators. After unloading, divers from the seagoing tug in our company patched the punctures and LST-980 proceeded back to Portsmouth, VA. at reduced speed, in the company of the tug. At Portsmouth, the ship was hauled out onto a marine railway for repairs. LST-980 was not able to pump out the damaged fuel tanks, consequently, thousands of gallons of diesel fuel drained into the James River. As something of a reward, LST-980 would spend the winters during the same period schlepping Marines around the sunny Caribbean on exercises, typically out of Gtmo and Vieques/Rosy Roads.

In July 1955, the 158 LSTs remaining on the Naval List (including the two post-WWII era LST-1153 class and the 54 Korean War-era LST 1156 class vessels) were given county names to go with the hull numbers. Thus, our LST-980 became USS Meeker County, the only ship named in honor of the rural south-central Minnesota county with Litchfield as its seat.

By this time, with over a decade of good service on her hull and most of her class either under a different flag or rusting away in mothballs, the ax came for our girl.

On 16 December 1955, the newly named Meeker County was decommissioned and placed in reserve status, first in Green Cove Springs, Florida, and then in Philly.

Reactivation, and headed to China Beach

With the problems in Southeast Asia suddenly coming to a head in 1965, and the Marines of Battalion Landing Team 3/9 wading ashore at Red Beach Two, north of Da Nang, on 8 March, the Navy suddenly found itself needing more gators.

Several mothballed LSTs were inspected and those found to be in better condition were modernized and reactivated for West Pac service.

The retrofit saw modern (ish) radars and commo gear installed on a new mast to the rear of the wheelhouse, the four forward Higgins boat davits removed while two aft were retained for 36-foot LCVPs, the armament reduced, and a helicopter deck installed on the top deck between Frames 16 and 26.

Meeker County was towed to Baltimore, modernized, and recommissioned on 23 September 1966.

Four months later she shipped out for Guam, her official “home port” although she would be bound for semi-permanent service with Landing Ship Squadron Three in Danang. LSRON3 was composed of a dozen modernized WWII LSTs (LST-344, 509, 525, 603, 819, 839, 901, 980, 1077, 1082, 1123, and 1150).

Meeker County, nicknamed at this point “Old Lovely” by her crew, would spend most of the next four years deployed to the South Vietnam littoral, with the gaps between the below periods generally seeing the LST in Subic Bay, Guam, Hong Kong, or Pearl Harbor undergoing maintenance, rotating crewmembers, or getting some much-needed R&R. 

In country: 

  • April-June; September-December 1967
  • February-May; June-October, and December 1968 (including the Tet Offensive)
  • January; March-April 1969
  • January-March, June-July 1970

These are not milk runs. Meeker County and her sister LSTs are often shelled by enemy mortar and artillery fire.

And, as the LST was almost done unloading:

Just a few trailers were left to unload when mortar rounds started coming in, hitting 200 yards from the ship. Before the enemy could correct their range, the unloading was completed and LT [Frank Elwood] Clark backed the ship away. As Meeker County started toward the narrow inlet, heavier artillery rounds began hitting the ramp. More rounds followed the ship as she made her way to the open sea; each succeeding round hit where the ship had been only a few seconds before.

Besides shells and mortar bombs, American ships were subject to repeated attacks by swimmers carrying improvised limpet mines.

These crack Binh chủng Đặc công sappers mounted at least 88 successful attacks against shipping in Vietnamese waters between January 1962 and June 1969 which killed more than 210 personnel and wounded 325. The worst of these was on a gator, USS Westchester County (LST-1167), which resulted in the U.S. Navy’s greatest single-incident combat loss of life during the entire Vietnam War: 25 killed and 27 wounded.

To counter such attacks, ships inshore would mount extensive topside sentries with grenades and rifles and occasionally spin up their props to scare away sneaky swimmers.

Meeker, in a repeat of her Normandy bombing, was once again lucky when the sappers came paddling through.

At 0220 on 28 June 1970, while berthed at the De Long Pier in Vung Tau with 14 feet of muddy water under her keel, a sentry on Meeker County spotted a nylon line secured to the pier, and soon after a swimmer was spotted in the area.

Coming to her assistance were EOD divers of the Royal Australian Navy’s Clearance Diving Team 3. LT Ross Blue, Petty Officer John Kershler, and Able Seaman Gerald Kingston.

As described by the Australian War Memorial:

Kershler dove into the water to discover explosives wrapped in black plastic, and four fishing floats secured to the nylon line.

The bundle was drawn clear of the ship and Blue towed it away using a small craft, so it didn’t touch the bottom of the harbour. It was secured to an empty barge a kilometer from the Meeker County and away from the main shipping channel. The plan was to move it to a nearby mud bank at high tide to inspect it more closely.

A few hours before that could occur, the package exploded, shooting water ten metres into the air. Fortunately, no one was near the package at the time, and there were no injuries or damage from the blast.

All told, Meeker County would earn 10 battle stars, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Navy Unit Commendation for Vietnam service, adding to her WWII battle star from Normandy and her Occupation Medal.

Meeker County was decommissioned, in December 1970, at Bremerton and laid up there. She joined 15 remaining WWII LSTs in U.S. service in mothballs while the last of the type on active duty, USS Pitkin County (LST-1082), was decommissioned the following September.

By 1975, with Saigon fallen, the Navy moved to dispose of the last of its WWII LSTs, and they were stricken from the Naval Register. The hulls would be transferred overseas, some scrapped, and others sold on the commercial market. The last to go was USS Duval County (LST-758), sold by MARAD in 1981.

Our Meeker County struck on April Fool’s Day 1975, was sold that December to Max Rouse & Sons, Beverly Hills, and soon was resold to fly a Singapore flag as MV LST 3. By 1978, she was operated by a Panama-owned Greek-flagged firm as MV Petrola 143 (IMO 7629893). Out of service by 1996, she was sold to a breaker in Turkey.

Epilogue

When it comes to enduring relics of our humble LST, little remains.

Some of her deck logs have been digitized in the National Archives.

The Admiral Benson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2818 in Litchfield, Minnesota is a dedicated Navy Club that remembers USS Meeker County.

Further, the LST Memorial has several photos of LST-980 and her crew digitized and preserved. 

One curious relic, the simple handmade snorkel that was left behind by Viet Cong saboteurs who tried to blow up Meeker County in 1970 was recovered by the Australian divers of CDT3 and is cataloged as part of the AWM’s collection.

“Improvised snorkel with plastic tube connected to a rubber mouthpiece, made from a tyre. Tied around the tube is a piece of khaki green lanyard, to be worn around the neck. A piece of roughly woven string is also attached to the snorkel. It divides at the other end into two piece of string, to which are attached two small balls for insertion in the nose while in use.” AWM RELAWM40821

As for the Ozzies of CDT 3, in the four years (February 1967 – May 1971) they were in Vietnam, they performed over 7,000 ship inspections and safely removed no less than 78 devices from allied hulls.

When it comes to Meeker County’s vast collection of over 1,000 sisters and near-sisters, 11 remain in some sort of service including Mexico, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines– where one, BRP Sierra Madre (LT-57), ex USS Harnett County (LST-821/AGP-281)/RVNS My Tho (HQ-800,) is famously grounded as an outpost on Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands.

Meanwhile, two WWII LSTs, none 542 types, are preserved as museum ships in the States. They are USS LST-325 in Evansville, Indiana, and LST-393 in Muskegon, Michigan. Please visit them if you have a chance.

Owen in the RVN

Some 56 years ago this month:

Note Sgt. Matheson’s distinctive top-fed WWII-era Owen Mk 2/3 Machine Carbine (submachine gun).

Designed by 24-year-old Pvt. Evelyn Ernest Owen, with 2/17 Battalion of the Australian Army, the gun can generally be regarded as Australia’s STEN and was placed into wartime production in 1943 with some 40,000 produced. 

Production Owen Mk 1 painted in green and yellow camouflage for use in jungle fighting. The pistol grips are black plastic and the butt is wood. The 33 round 9mm magazine didn’t last long at the guns ripping 700 rounds per minute rate of fire — but “Diggers” would carry lots of spare mags to keep it stoked.

 

Late model Owen Mk 1/43 SMG complete with canvas sling mounted on the left-hand side. The butt is the skeleton frame type with a clip for an oil bottle — similar to the one found on the U.S. M1A1 Carbine.

 

The WWII era guns were refurbished at the Australian Lithgow Small Arms factory in the 1950s, which included stripping away the camo and giving them new MkIII style barrels and a safety catch. This is a good example of the latter type of “improved” Mk2/3 Owen.

As well documented in images online at the AWM, the 9mm Owen continued to see much front-line use in Korea, augmenting the bolt-action .303 Enfield with the Diggers against the Norks and Chinese “volunteers.”

Owens remained in service with the Australians well into the 1960s– with Vietnam being its last hurrah, serving alongside M16s and inch-pattern semi-auto FALs– then they were replaced by the very Owen-like F1 submachine gun, which was in turn replaced by the Steyr F88 in the 1990s.

Operation Alamo at 80

Markham Valley, Nadzab Airfield, near Lae, New Guinea: An Australian Digger and a U.S. Army Paratrooper link up on 6 September 1943. The day before, the paratroops had taken the valley in a surprise assault by air in conjunction with Allied landings at Lae, about a dozen miles to the East.

Note the Digger’s distinctive Owen submachine gun, which may denote him as a member of 2/6th Independent Company commandos, which was part of the small overland force that set out to rendevous at Nadzab from Tsili Tsili on 2 September. Also of interest is the apparently field-made assault vest worn by the Paratrooper of the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, who had just carried out their first combat jump.

Besides the commandoes, the Australian overland group, primarily engineers and pioneers, consisted of B Company/Papuan Infantry Battalion, 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion, 2/6th Field Company, and detachments from the 7th Division Signals, 2/5th Field Ambulance and ANGAU, along with 760 native porters.

The day after the landing, the Australians and Americans went to work on the airstrip with hand tools. Trees were felled, potholes filled in, and a windsock erected while the waist-high Kunai grass was burned away.

Some 27 miles northwest of strategically important Lae by road and half that by air, it was as if Nadzab was placed in the middle of nowhere for a reason. A godsend to Allied strategists.

Founded in 1910 as a German colonial Lutheran mission station, by 1943, the grassland at Nadzab, at one time cleared from the jungle perhaps for experiments in farming, was some 900 yards long but it was thought it was easily clearable to 2,000 yards with a little work– making it an ideal location for an airfield in the Japanese’s back yard.

After much planning, it was hit by 1,700 men of the 503 PIR in a full-scale regimental jump, with 31 Australian gunners of the 2/4th Field Regiment tagging along on what was only their second time leaving an aircraft via parachute. 

The 255-aircraft initial assault on 5 September was dramatic in the extreme, being led by 48 low-level B-25 bombers who blitzed the unoccupied valley with 2,800 20-pound frag bombs and their on-board .50 cals, followed by 7 A-20s laying smoke for the 79 C-47s that carried the paratroopers. Five B-17s brought up the rear, dropping supplies. Fighter cover was provided by a mix of 108 P-38s, P-39s, and P-47s. Another three B-17s filled with command observers– including MacArthur himself who received an Air Medal for the act– along with five more B-17s carrying weather and nav teams, kept everyone in line.

The 31 Ozzies of 54 Battery, 2/4th Field Regt, with only one practice jump under their belt, parachuted into Nadzab later that day with two dismantled 25-pounder-Short guns and 192 boxes of ammunition to provide the Americans some more support than their organic 60mm mortars, dropped by a mix of five C-47s and two B-17s.

While smoke screens build up, paratroopers drop from low-flying Douglas C-47 airplanes on each side, along the column of C-47s and about 1,000 ft. above them, come close-cover fighter support. (U.S. Air Force Number C25418AC)

Jumping unopposed, the 503rd lost three men killed and 33 injured in hard hits while one member of the Australian 2/4th Field Regt was likewise injured. Nonetheless, the results were so good that a follow-on glider force assault was canceled and the first transport aircraft landed at the improvised airstrip the next morning, with more than 40 planes cycling in on D+1 alone.

The next day, air-portable bulldozers and graders began arriving and within a month the airfield was fully functional with four strips. This enabled the Australian 7th and 9th Infantry Divisions to close with the Japanese.

The landing forced the Japanese evacuation of Lae to take a route that proved to be disastrous for them and 3rd Bn/503d had a major skirmish with the rear guard of this exodus.

As noted by the Army, “The successful employment of Parachute troops, in the Markham Valley, has been credited with saving the concept of vertical envelopment from being abandoned following several less than successful engagements in Europe.”

The field, besides being a logistical hub for the Australian-American forces pushing the Japanese out of New Guinea, Nadzab served as a base for assorted 5th Air Force units including the F-7 Dumbos of the 20th Combat Mapping Squadron (20th CMS), the B-25s of the “Air Apaches” of the 345th Bombardment Group, and the 43rd Bombardment Group (Heavy), with “Ken’s Men” flying their big B-24 Liberators from the growing base in 1944. Likewise, Navy units of the FAW-17, including the lumbering PB4Y-1 patrol bombers of VB-106, were stationed there as well.

Post-war, Nadzab was abandoned by the Allies, almost as quickly as it was occupied.

It eventually became a commercial airport, with, ironically, a redevelopment project spearheaded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

As for the 503rd, they jumped again in July 1944 at Noemfoor Island in New Guinea as an airborne reinforcement, helping to defend the Kamiri airstrip against Japanese counterattacks. After that operation, the 503rd shifted to the Philippine Islands where, on 16 February 1945, the regiment made its celebrated jump onto Corregidor Island in Manilla Bay, earning its nickname “The Rock.”

Today its first battalion (1–503rd IR) is still on active duty, assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Vicenza, Italy.
